A Hero's Journey
What does choose to live a hero’s journey mean to me? It
means making every moment count. It
means putting others first. It means
loving and living life to its fullest. It
means contributing to society, being a good person, and helping others on life’s
journey.
My husband and I started a rental property management
company with my father-in-law and brother-in-law. My husband and I put up the start up money
and my father-in-law and Brother-in-law ran the company. After 5 years and no return on our
investment, we decided to become more involved in the company. We found that my father-in-law spent every
last dime, no matter how much came in.
the company actually made tons of money, but my FIL just couldn’t control
his spending. He not only kept spending
all the money, but he kept dipping into the owners trust account, which was
illegal. After talking to him again and
again, and after a few more years and hiring an accountant, we finally asked to
be bought out of the company. It was
hurting our relationship with the family, and we felt it wasn’t worth it. My father-in-law agreed to let us out but
only wanted to give us half of our original investment. By this time, we agreed because we were
worried about the liability of lawsuits because of his illegal practices. He kept promising to give us the buyout money
the following month and again the following month. Finally, we just signed the company over to
him and my BIL. The company has been a huge
blessing in both of their lives, and even though we lost our entire investment,
we are happy, and we feel good that we were able to bless our family.
My father-in-law is nearing the end of his life and I once
told him that someday he will regret his pursuit of money, over his integrity
and relationship with his children. I believe
that he will have to ask himself someday
soon “have I contributed something meaningful? Am I a good person? And who did
I love, and who loved me?” and I fear for
him that he wont like the answers to those questions.
